He was bequeathed the land by his former employer, the Governor and held full title to it. The problem was that the city wanted to turn this land together with others like it into a park. Because he was the only person with title to his land, he struck a deal with the city fathers in which he agreed to move off the land but only lease the land to the city for 150 years. In 2000, this land which includes part of Central Park is about to be redeveloped, but there is a problem. The City Council does not find the title deeds in the city archive, where the deeds to the rest of the parcels of land were filed. When they do finally track down the document, they realise they have a major problem on their hands. The lease on the land is about to expire and title will revert to the descendants of Joe Johnson. The familys astonishment and elation at their inheritance is soon replaced by anger and fear as they realise that the people behind the development are trying to coerce them into signing away the land. Bully boy tactics and the abduction of a teenage boy lead to police and FBI involvement. The story then takes many twists and turns in reaching it’s thrilling conclusion.
